Funding Support for Students
Do you have a passion for construction and farming, but you are not sure which to pursue? Why not enrol on our new Pearson Level 3 National Diploma in Construction with National Extended Certificate in Agriculture. This Level 3 qualification will give you the option to progress into Higher Education in either the construction or agriculture sectors, or can be your doorway into a career in either sector.
The aim of the course is to build upon the interest learners may already have in the fields of both construction and agriculture, to develop their skills, deepen their understanding, and prepare them to progress to Higher Education, or alternatively enter employment in either sector directly.
During the course students will be able to undertake additional qualifications to support their main programme of study – e.g. 2D AutoCAD, Construction Skills Register (CSR) Card. This will help improve practical skills and enhance employability. The student experience will be further enhanced by regular site visits, helping to contextualise the learning. Guest speakers from disciplines across industry will also regularly deliver lectures on specialised topics. All learners will be given the opportunity to undertake a short work placement in the Construction/Civil Engineering or Agriculture sectors during their course of study.
Four GCSEs at grade C or above or Level 2 BTEC. Entry is subject to a successful interview.
Four of the units are externally assessed: Construction Principles (examination), Construction Design (set tasks) and Professional Working Responsibilities (examination) and Plant & Soil Science (examination. All other units are internally assessed by projects and coursework assignments
Upon successful completion, learners may progress to a range of Higher Education courses such as a Foundation Degree or Honours Degree at South West College in for example, Ulster University Foundation Degree in Engineering in Civil Engineering, Ulster University Foundation Degree in Construction Engineering with Surveying, Pearson Higher National Diploma in Quantity Surveying, Building Services with Sustainable Construction (validated by The Open University), Queens University Belfast Foundation Degree in Environmental Management and these can lead to Honours degree programmes including BSc (Hons) Top Up Construction Engineering and Management (validated or The Open University), or BEng (Hons) Top Up Building Services with Sustainable Energy (validated by The Open University). It is also possible to progress directly into employment, or in some cases to self-employment, using the skills learned.
The course is suitable for school leavers wishing to progress to university or undertake a Foundation Degree at South West College. This new course would also be suitable for those students who have been in industry (perhaps coming from a trade or farming background) who wish to progress their career. The course will be undertaken on a full-time basis. Students will also have the opportunity to complete Essential Skills or GCSE qualifications in Mathematics, English and ICT
