Overview

Holders of the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. Through this, they will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making. At Level 5, students continue to build on the essential skills, knowledge and techniques necessary for all quantity surveyors, while working through a larger number of subject-specific mandatory and optional units.

School/College leavers must have reached the age of 18 years on admission. All applications will be individually considered. Successful applicants must have normally reached their 18th birthday by 31 August in the year of entry and have studied at level 3 or above for a minimum of two years. Applicants should possess a minimum of five GCSEs grades A, B, C that should include English and Maths or other equivalent qualifications in addition to one of the following*: successful completion of an advanced diploma; successful completion of a Level BTEC National diploma in a related subject; successful completion of Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in a related subject; successful completion of A-level study with a minimum of two subjects passed; equivalent qualifications such as Scottish certificate of education or international baccalaureate, a European baccalaureate, Irish leaving certificate with grade C or above in four subjects at higher level; qualifications deemed equivalent to the above; a UCAS tariff score of 40 or above is desired for entry to this program entry can also be made from national certificate/diploma, HE access, NVQ’s or by the colleges policy relating to APEL. due to the highly creative nature of the discipline, students with exceptional portfolios of work that demonstrate competency and natural creativity will also be considered on individual merit. *In the event of over subscription entry criteria may be enhanced. Within the programme students skills and knowledge will be tested using a variety of methods such as:

  • written reports
  • time-controlled assessments
  • creation of design documents
  • projects
  • solutions to construction problems, through discourse and/or calculation
  • academic posters, displays, leaflets
  • PowerPoint (or similar) presentations

On successful completion of the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma,

students can develop their careers in the quantity surveying sector through:

  • entering employment
  • continuing existing employment
  • linking with the appropriate professional body
  • linking with the appropriate vendor accredited certificates [if appropriate]
  • committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • progressing to university.
